Tiered Insight Mapping: Organizing Your Study of Scripture

Updated: Dec 8, 2024

We've all had the experience of reading a powerful verse, feeling moved, and then... forgetting it by next week. Sometimes we are inspired by insights, yet they’re scattered, making it hard to hold onto the wisdom we uncover. Tiered insight mapping can change that. This technique is a structured way to capture and organize the insights you gain from expository Bible study. By prioritizing ideas and mapping them into tiers, you’ll find it easier to remember, meditate on, and apply Scripture in your daily life.

As Matt Chandler has often observed, God’s Word is not meant to simply inform us, but ultimately to transform us into the likeness of Christ.[1] A tiered insight mapping method helps us retain what we learn, transforming our lives by rooting ourselves in the Word of God. In this post, we will walk through the tiered mapping method of Bible study and explore how it can enhance your expository study experience.

What Is Tiered Insight Mapping?

Tiered insight mapping is a method of categorizing your expository Bible study insights into different levels of importance. It organizes ideas into three tiers: Primary insights, secondary insights, and tertiary insights.

Primary Insights: Foundational truths that reflect the core message or main takeaway.

Secondary Insights: Supporting ideas that build upon the primary insights, often adding context or depth.

Tertiary Insights: Additional observations that may be interesting or thought-provoking but aren’t central to the main message.

Creating a tiered structure of primary, secondary, and tertiary insights allows the focus to remain on the central message of a passage without losing valuable secondary and tertiary insights and inspirations. This method aligns with the principles found in Proverbs 2:1-5: “My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God” (ESV).

How Tiered Insight Mapping Enhances Bible Study

Focus and Retention: Tiered mapping helps us remember what truly matters by focusing on core ideas. This approach aligns with Psalm 119:11: “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”

Depth of Understanding: By organizing insights into levels, we can dig deeper into complex passages, examining how primary messages are supported by additional layers of meaning.

Practical Application: Tiered insight mapping keeps us grounded, helping us apply the primary lessons from Scripture more effectively in our lives. James 1:22 reminds us, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” Paul David Tripp asserts that how we live reflects how much we trust the Word of God.[1] If we believe it’s God’s Word, we’ll seek methods that help us truly engage with it.

Step-by-Step Guide to Tiered Insight Mapping

1. Identify Primary Insights: Start with the Main Message

The primary insights should reflect the core message of the passage. These are the truths that stand out, revealing the central point or theme. To determine the primary insight, ask, “What is the main takeaway from this text?”

2. Pinpoint Secondary Insights: Add Supporting Ideas

Secondary insights are observations that support or expand upon the primary insights. These insights might include additional details, contextual elements, or key cross-references that enrich the main message.

3. Note Tertiary Insights: Capture Interesting Observations

Tertiary insights are inevitably intriguing observations that may not be directly related to the main message but still add value to your study or your faith. These could include word studies, cultural references, or personal reflections.

This process allows for a holistic understanding of the text, moving from the foundational truths to supplementary ideas, and finally to nuanced reflections. As J.D. Greet reminds us in Above All, the Gospel is the unchanging eternal truth in a perpetually changing world.[1]

Tiered Insight Mapping in Action: Romans 12:1-2 - A Practical Example

With a strong understanding of what tiered insight mapping is and why it is important, we start by first exploring the primary insight found in these verses. Paul calls believers to present their bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. Paul also sets forth the pattern by which followers of Christ are to accomplish this; by being transformed by the renewing of their mind. The main message then, is that Christians are to live a life wholly dedicated to God, markedly distinct from the patterns of this world.

Secondarily, Romans 12:1-2 teach that the Christian life is defined as an ongoing commitment rather than being defined by a one-time act. We also see the will of God becomes knowable, and therefore doable, as a believer is transformed by a renewed mind. It is also noted that living a sacrificial life according to God's will is possible because of His mercy. Indeed, Lamentations says, “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (3:22-23a).

Tertiary Insights are revealed by exploring the Greek words for “conform,” suschematizo, and “transform,” metamorphoo. These words reveal a distinct contrast between external adaptation and internal change. The difference between behavioral modification and values assimilation. The passage suggests that there must be active resistance to the daily influences of the world, again highlighting the power and necessity of pursing a renewed mind. This truth in the text is the fundamental Christian basis for modern psychological approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Practical Benefits of Tiered Insight Mapping

1. Improved Recall

Tiered mapping enhances memory retention, especially when it comes to the main message of a passage. Instead of recalling scattered notes, you have a clear, structured takeaway.

2. Balanced Study

By organizing ideas into levels, this method encourages a balanced approach to Scripture, ensuring that primary truths are prioritized while allowing room for rich detail.

3. Enhanced Meditation

Meditating on primary insights first provides a solid foundation before moving into additional observations. This layered focus deepens our ability to dwell on Scripture meaningfully.

“But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his Law he meditates day and night” (Psalm 1:2, ESV).

Practical Tips for Using Tiered Insight Mapping

Here are some tips to make tiered insight mapping a natural part of your study routine:

Use Highlighters: Assign different colors for primary, secondary, and tertiary insights to visually separate them.

Take Time for Reflection: Don’t rush through the tiers. Allow time to reflect on each level’s significance.

Journal Your Insights: Keep a physical journal or digital note where you organize insights by tier, creating a structured record of your study. After-all, journaling what the Spirit of God has shown you in the Word of God is biblical. "Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it” (Habakkuk 2:2, NIV).

Embracing Tiered Insight Mapping for Deeper Bible Engagement

Tiered insight mapping isn’t just a tool for organizing notes; it’s a framework that transforms our approach to Scripture. By distinguishing primary messages from secondary details, we cultivate a more focused and purposeful engagement with God’s Word.

As Al Mohler said, “Without the Bible, the church has no authoritative word and no doctrinal order.”[4] Tiered insight mapping keeps us deeply connected to Scripture, ensuring that we’re not just studying it but allowing it to shape our lives. This method can help us hold onto God’s truths, applying them faithfully in our everyday lives. “The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple” (Psalm 119:130, NIV).
